Green Tara and White Tara

  Who is Tara?

The word Tara is etymologically rooted in the word "star", but the most popular meaning of "Tara" is "she who saves", or "saviouress".
As a popular Buddhist deity in the Mahayana tradition--especially in Tibet--Green Tara is compassionate, wise, and quick-acting.
If one needs Tara and recites her mantra , it is said that Tara will quickly come to assist.

Tara's name means One Who Saves. Her compassion for living beings and

her desire to save them from suffering is said to be stronger than a
mother's love for her children. Tara is the Bodhisattva who
represents the miraculous activity of all the Buddhas of the past,
present, and future.

Tara's Mantra:  Om Tare Tutare Ture Svaha

Pronunciation notes:
aa is like a in father
e is ay in lay
v is pronounced halfway between English v and w. If in doubt, then a w sound will do

Closely allied with Kuan Yin is Tara (Star), goddess of protection
and compassion, worshipped by Tibetan, Mongolian, and Nepali
Buddhists. According to "Mandala:
In myth she is born from Avalokitesvara's tears of compassion or from her own vow to be

enlightened and stay a woman...
There are innumerable manifestations of Tara, as many as beings require, but her most famous are the peaceful
White Tara, who brings protection, long life and peace; and
the dynamic Green Tara, who overcomes obstacles and saves beings in
dangerous situations."

Mythologically, the Green Tara came into being when the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara cried upon seeing all of the suffering in the Universe.

He cried so much that a pond grew out of his tears.

Out of this pond grew a blue lotus flower, and on this flower appeared a beautiful woman.

Her translucent green color was luminous with a great energy.
She held a deep blue lotus, symbolizing limitless giving and refuge.

The color green is said to symbolize her quick action, and also her role as a forest deity.

White Tara is the Sanskrit name for the Tibetan goddess of compassion, known as "Drolkar".

Her seven eyes - on the palms of her hands, soles of her feet, and her forehead - symbolize the watchfulness of the compassionate mind.

As a figure that represents the mother of all living creatures, she strives constantly to alleviate the sufferings of those around her.

. One calls on her for health, strength, and longevity.

Her white colour indicates purity, but also indicates that she is Truth complete and undifferentiated.
